There are four common questions that many people ask about World Bullion Coins:
Premium - is a term often used on this page, the term premium is used by coin dealers in reference to the markup of a coin, above its intrinsic value. |
Answer: Government Mints, or a Government owned corporation or entity.
World Bullion is a term used for Government Bullion coins minted around the world.
Government Bullion coins are legal tender, and are backed by
the government that issues them; which guarantees the coins weight,
purity, and face value. Although the face value on a bullion coin rarely comes close to the real or intrinsic value of the coin.
Many of these coins receive a higher premium price on the retail and secondary markets than other forms of bullion.
Government bullion coins display images by world renown coin designers who have received multiple awards for their artwork.
These designers include; William Woodruff (Canada), Elise Martinson (Australia), John Mercanti (United States), and Jody Clark (United Kingdom).
The symbols that designers include on bullion coins represent their country's national heritage, which include:
In addition to the symbols found on these bullion coins, many of these Government Issued Bullion Coins are minted with a proof-like surface, which also helps to increase their premium on the secondary market.
Minted since 1967, the Gold Krugerrand is the World's most circulated gold bullion coin.
The gold bullion coin gets its name from the popular four-term President of the old Republic of South Africa, Paul Kruger (1883 - 1900), and the South African currency known as the "Rand".
During the 1970's and 80's the Krugerrand dominated the bullion sales with 90% market.
However, South Africa's policy of apartheid brought
along economic sanctions against the country which made the Krugerrand
an illegal import in many Western countries.
In 1994, South Africa abandoned apartheid, shortly after the sanctions were lifted, the Krugerrand regained its status as one of the world's leading gold bullion coin.
Since its introduction, over 60-million pieces, or more than 53-million ounces of gold, have been sold, that's more than its closest competitors the American Gold Eagle and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins. (Source: Mining Weekly)
First minted in 1986, the American Eagle Gold bullion coin contains its full stated weight in 22 Karat Gold, which by law, must be mined from sources inside the United States.
The Eagle weighs 33.9 grams, consisting of 31.1 grams of ‘pure’ gold (91.67%), silver (3%), and copper (5.33%). It is a favorite of investors and collectors for its high premiums, design, and enduring qualities.
The "Type I" design of the American Gold Eagle was produced from 1986 thru 2021.
Type II - American Gold Eagle
Coinciding with the American Eagle Bullion Coins 35th Anniversary, the United States Mint announced the first change to the Mint’s two best-selling coin programs.
They announced new designs for the reverse sides of the American Silver Eagles and American Gold Eagles in 2021.
Thirty-nine images, seen here, were provided to the U.S. Mint for the final approval of the gold eagle's final design, the reverse design shown on the "Type II," was the one chosen.
Before the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin was minted, the only 1 oz. gold bullion coin minted in the world was the South African Krugerrand.
In 1979, the 1 oz. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint, however, from 1979 - 1981, the coin only had a gold purity of 0.999.
Since 1982, every Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin has been minted with .9999 fine gold, making it one of the purest gold coins regularly issued.
In 2013, for added security, the Royal Canadian Mint added a Laser engraved feature to the 1oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin's reverse side.
The new security mark is a Micro-Engraved Maple Leaf design produced by the Mint’s use of laser technology.
Inside the laser-engraved maple leaf is the numeral indicating the coin’s year of issue, which is more easily visible under magnification.
Furthermore, in 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint added radial lines to make it harder for counterfeiters to reproduce the coins, these lines are inscribed on both sides of the gold bullion coin.
The American Silver Eagle bullion coin is the official silver bullion coin of the United States, and it regularly sells over 20 million coins a year in the variety of ways it is minted: bullion, proof, and un-circulated.
On
July 9th, of 1985, the United States Congress passed the Liberty Coin
Act, the law authorized the US Mint to start minting Gold and Silver American Eagle bullion coins.
The United States introduced the silver eagle coin on November 24, 1986; the silver coin's content, weight, and purity are all certified by the United States Mint.
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has been minted by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1988.
The Silver Maple Leaf has a purity of .9999 silver which makes it one of the purest bullion coins minted today; among bullion investors and coin collectors, the Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin is one of the most sought-after bullion coins in the world.
The purity of Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf series of coins (gold, silver, platinum, & palladium) makes these coins one of the most appealing ways to buy precious metal bullion coins in the world today.
Like the American Silver Eagle, and the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Chinese Silver Pandas often carry an attractive resale premium, making them a great investment.
Collectors love the Chinese Silver and Gold Panda bullion coins because the reverse side is redesigned each year with a new image of one or more pandas.
For the first several years after these coins where initially released in 1989, the Chinese government would only mint a maximum of 100,000 to 200,000 coins a year. Now because of their popularity they regularly mint 10,000,000 a year.
There are over 15 different countries that produce bullion coins for investors and collectors.
