In 2022, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced Premium Bullion. Premium Bullion are limited mintage gold and silver bullion coins for investors and collectors alike.
The bullion coins are crafted from pure 99.99% gold or silver and come encapsulated in specialty assay cards signed by Charles Daoust, the Chief Assayer of the Royal Canadian Mint.
The 2024 edition features a scene of a mother polar bear with her almost independent cub nuzzling her in their Arctic habitat; young polar bears are known to stay with their mothers for up to two and a half years.
The design for this coin is based on original artwork by wildlife artist W. Allan Hancock.
Alex Tirabasso, the Royal Canadian Mint engraver who worked on the polar bear coin design, stated that one of his challenges was with the fur on the bears. He stated, “Hancock’s original design suggests that the bears’ fur is dry and not wet, which would be easier to sculpt. As the engraver, I needed to sculpt it in a way to convey this.”
Alex also stated the following about re-developing the design for minting, “I think of the design as form and function. The form, or 3D sculpting, should realistically and elegantly depict the polar bears in their northern home, but should also function for manufacturing. For me, these two concepts are always linked. We want to achieve that flawless MS-70 standard.” (Source: The Art of Crafting Pure Gold Coins: Insights from our Assay & Engraving Teams)
The 2024 Premium Bullion 1/10 oz Gold Majestic Polar Bear Coin is available in two versions: First Strikes and Mint State.
Exclusive to the "First Strike" Premium Bullion version of the coin is an encased capsule that can be easily removed from the assay card, as seen in the video below.
Note: The Mint State Premium Bullion version of the coin is encapsulated in the Royal Canadian Mint's assay card packaging, which provides an unobstructed view of the coin’s features.
