The 1 oz American Buffalo Gold bullion coin was authorized by the United States Congress in 2005, under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, Public Law 109-145, Section 202 (page 2672), and minted in June 2006.
The Gold Buffalo coin is the first 24-karat, 99.99% pure gold coin ever struck by the United States Mint.
The obverse and reverse sides of the American Buffalo Gold bullion coin show images by the American sculptor James Earle Fraser, a pupil of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1oz American Buffalo Gold bullion coin features a Native American Indian Chief, a design by James Earle Fraser, sourced from the 1913 "Buffalo Nickel."
James Earle Fraser created the design by combining the features of three Great Indian Chiefs from different American tribes: Big Tree (Kiowa Indians), Iron Tail (Sioux Indians), and Two Moons (Cheyenne Indians), who posed for him to sketch.
